Kids in hospitals are like children everywhere—they just want to be happy and play. We're here to help that happen by getting your extra or used crayons to kids who will cherish them. The crayons are then sent to hospitals across the country to provide children with the tools they need to make art.
The Crayon Initiative collects used crayons that would otherwise end up in the landfill and recycles into new crayons for children's hospitals. The goal? Bringing happiness to children who are facing the stress of hospitalization by giving them the freedom that comes with creative play.
One night during a family dinner outing founder Bryan Ware wondered what could be done with all the used crayons in the world - and could they create more joy rather than just being thrown out? He took the crayons home and got busy—figuring out the art of collecting and sorting old crayons and melting them down to make new ones. The Crayon Initiative now partners with over 240 hospitals nationwide to provide free crayons to kids. Volunteers sort crayons, melt them in custom ovens, and mold them into new triangular shaped crayons so they're easier to hold and won't roll off of hospital tables.
